Newcastle striker Callum Wilson sends transfer message to Kalvin Phillips amid Man City uncertainty

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has suggested Kalvin Phillips should leave Manchester City on loan amid growing uncertainty over the midfielder's future.

Phillips was hoping to get his chance at City after seeing Rodri sent off against Nottingham Forest, but the former Leeds United man only started in the Carabao Cup defeat at Newcastle. Pep Guardiola preferred to start both Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva in the deeper role, signalling a lack of trust in last summer's £42million arrival.

Speaking while away on international duty with England, Phillips suggested he was considering his future at City amid a lack of minutes. The 27-year-old admitted he is keen to play regularly in the build-up to next summer's European Championships and has courted plenty of interest.

Newcastle could be in the market for a central midfielder, with Sandro Tonali set for a lengthy ban after admitting to a number of betting charges. They have been linked with a move for Phillips and Magpies striker Wilson has suggested a loan deal could benefit the player.

"I think it all depends on the individual and what they want," Wilson told the Footballer's Football Podcast. "If you stay at Man City you finish your career with numerous trophies. If that is something that appeals to you, then great. But he is still so young though, and he is a top player, and he’ll feel he can contribute to that City squad.
