Newcastle see off Saints to march into Carabao Cup final

A Sean Longstaff brace secured Newcastle United a 2-1 win over Southampton in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final to seal a Wembley date and a step closer to ending their drought for silverware.

The Magpies, whose last major trophy was in 1969, held a 1-0 lead after the away win at St Mary's, and despite being reduced to 10 men for the final 10 minutes after Bruno Guimaraes was dismissed for a challenge on Sam Edozie, were too strong for a battling Saints side.

The home side took the lead in the fifth minute when captain Kieran Trippier cut into the right-hand side of the box and found Longstaff, who drilled the ball low into the bottom corner.

The midfielder added his second of the night for the hosts to go 2-0 up after 21 minutes, sparked by a good move down the left from Joe Willock.

Miguel Almiron then squared it to Longstaff, who smashed the ball low from the centre of the box to double the lead.

Southampton soon pulled one back just before the half-hour mark with Che Adams blasting the ball from outside the box to beat Nick Pope in the bottom corner, ending the Newcastle goalkeeper’s spell of 931 minutes without conceding in all competitions.
