Newcastle release 13 young players including man who set up Joelinton on his first-team debut

Tom Allan is among more than a dozen Newcastle United youngsters who have been released this summer as the club's academy overhaul continues.

Allan previously made an appearance for Newcastle's first team and actually laid on an assist for Joelinton in a 4-1 win against Rochdale in the FA Cup at St James' Park on his professional debut back in 2020. Fellow under-23s Ryan Barrett, Brad Cross, Oisin McEntee, Mo Sangare, Reagan Thomson, Jake Turner and Adam Wilson have also departed, but the club have confirmed that offers have been made to Matthew Bondswell, Niall Brookwell, Will Brown, Lewis Cass, Joe Oliver and Dylan Stephenson.

At under-18 level, Piotr Banda, Liam Chrystal, Joel Green, Josh Nicholson and Nathan Robertson have all been released, but second-year scholars Harry Barclay, Kyle Crossley, James Huntley, Jamie Miley, Michael Ndiweni and Joshua Stewart have been offered professional contracts. Ndiweni, incidentally, has trained with the first team under Eddie Howe this season and the Newcastle head coach previously said he 'really likes' the striker.

Speaking after the retained list was confirmed, academy boss Steve Harper said: "I'd like to thank each and every player for their efforts during their time at the academy.

"Our aim is to not just develop good footballers that can play in the first team, but good people who are equipped and prepared for life in or out of the game, and I'm incredibly proud of the academy
