Newcastle: Keith Downie drops update on striker search at St James' Park

Newcastle United are on the lookout for a new striker but are struggling to find somebody who is the right fit for the club, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Eddie Howe is currently preparing the Magpies for the start of the 2022-23 campaign but there remains a focus on strengthening ahead of the September 1 summer transfer deadline. 

It has not been the free-spending summer many expected at St James’ Park after they were taken over by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund last season. 

Only three signings have been made his month with Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Nick Pope all making the permanent move to the North East. 

But Howe seemingly remains eager to bring in attacking reinforcements ahead of the September deadline. 

Duvan Zapata, Armando Broja, Harvey Barnes and Jack Harrison are all among those to be linked with moves to the club, but it is proving a tricky mission with a significant lack of options available to clubs in search of frontmen at the moment. 

Downie understands that while the Magpies remain eager to bring in a new striker this summer, there are not many options to choose from. 

The Sky Sports reporter says, that after speaking to contacts, there are few players available that fit the bill at St James’ Park. 

Downie told GIVEMESPORT: “There are very few strikers out there available in the mould that they are looking for. I spoke to a few different agents and people involved in trying to do deals with strikers in this window and there are just so few out there.”

As Downie has alluded to, it appears Newcastle are only interested in adding attacking reinforcements if they are deemed to be the right fit for the club.
