Newcastle goalkeeper 'wanted' by Steve Bruce as Sam Johnstone set for West Brom exit

West Brom manager Steve Bruce is reportedly interested in bringing Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow to the club.

Sam Johnstone had been Albion’s number once since signing for the club from Manchester United in 2018. However, after the England international decided to run down his contract at the Hawthorns, Bruce chose to leave the 29-year-old out of his matchday squads in April and opted to play back-up keeper David Button .

Button has since signed a new deal at the club until 2024. Bruce , though, has been linked with a potential move for one of his former players at Newcastle to help bolster his goalkeeping options.

It has been reported by The Sun that Newcastle shot-stopper Darlow is “wanted” by Bruce and is “on the list” of players that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will move on as he looks to rebuild his squad. The Magpies are under new ownership but will still have to abide by financial fair play rules.

Darlow is touted for a loan move to Albion , with Newcastle setting their sights on Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The 31-year-old has made eight appearances for Newcastle this term, with Martin Dubravka the clear number one at St. James’ Park.

The news comes as The Athletic reports that Johnstone could be nearing a move to West Ham. It is stated that the Hammers “appear to be leading the race” for Johnstone, with Tottenham and Southampton having previously expressed interest in the Albion keeper.

Bruce has made his feelings clear regarding Johnstone’s situation. The manager outlined his reasons for dropping the former Manchester United man, prior to leaving him out of the club’s last five games of the season.

“David Button will play,” Bruce said, ahead of the home game against Blackpool
