Newcastle: Final week could become 'frantic' at St James' Park

Newcastle United could be in for a ‘frantic’ final few days of the transfer window with injury problems potentially shifting their plans, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Eddie Howe has overseen a busy summer of business at St James’ Park but may well add to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

The Magpies have a number of fitness concerns ahead of their upcoming clash with Wolves.

Jonjo Shelvey is set to be a long-term absentee after injuring his hamstring in a pre-season clash with Benfica and undergoing surgery.

Elsewhere, Callum Wilson and Emil Krafth are set to miss this weekend’s meeting with various knocks while Ryan Fraser and Dan Burn also remain doubts.

The impact of Wilson’s set-back may well be softened with Newcastle closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak, with a £60 million fee agreed.

It is understood that the Sweden international will sign a six-year contract at St James’ Park, smashing the club’s transfer record in the process.  

Midfield reinforcements are also on the agenda. According to The Sun, Conor Gallagher has become the club’s number one target for the remainder of the window.

Meanwhile, transfer insider Dean Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Newcastle were looking at Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.

Downie understands that, because of recent injury troubles, the window could become slightly frantic in the final days in the North East.

But the reporter says that the club are waiting on the results of various scans before making any firm decisions.
