Newcastle: Eddie Howe urged to snub 144-goal star at St James' Park

Newcastle United target Ivan Toney will not take Eddie Howe’s side into the top six, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The Brentford star is one striker who the Tyneside club are thought to be looking at ahead of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle’s search for a new No.9 seems to have taken them to Toney, who played for the Magpies before leaving for Peterborough back in 2018.

As per The Telegraph, the 26-year-old has become a target for Howe, with Benfica’s Darwin Nunez no longer seen as a viable option.

Interest in Toney comes after a strong season in the Premier League. The Englishman has scored more than 10 times in the top flight this term, helping Brentford to stay away from what has been a fierce relegation battle down at the bottom.

He is unlikely to come cheap, though, as 90min has claimed that the Bees are likely to demand a fee in excess of £50m.

“I don’t believe he is. I think he’s a good player, but he’s not going to take them into the top six.”

According to 90min, Arsenal, West Ham, Everton and Wolves also have eyes on Toney, so there could be a real transfer tussle for his signature this summer.

Does he have the ability to fire the Magpies into the top six next season? Maybe not single-handedly, but
