Newcastle: Eddie Howe handed 'massive boost' at St James' Park

Fabian Schar’s recent contract extension is a “massive boost” for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Following his revival since Howe replaced Steve Bruce back in October, the 69-cap Switzerland international was rewarded with a new deal, which runs until the summer of 2024.

Prior to Howe’s arrival, the centre-back had made just a handful of top-flight outings this season and appeared to be on his way out of St James’ Park this summer, with his deal expiring at the end of June.

However, his appointment has led to a resurgence from the 30-year-old, who’s started all-but three of his top-flight games as manager of the Toon Army.

Following Schar’s return to the side, Newcastle have only lost seven of the 22 games that he’s started under Howe, and five of those came against teams currently sitting inside the top six, highlighting the improvements that the Magpies have made with him in the starting line-up.

As a result, Howe was keen to keep the defender on board, which is why he signed a two-year contract last month.

And Jones believes that his turnaround in fortunes is great news for Howe, who’s clearly earned the trust from those above him.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s been a massive boost for Eddie Howe because it shows that the club has confidence in his own vision and shows that Eddie Howe has got a big say on how this team shapes up for the future.”
