Chelsea: New owners will 'make statement' at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea could be busy in the summer transfer window as the Blues’ incoming owners will want to make a statement at Stamford Bridge, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The west Londoners are currently third in the Premier League, but there are still doubts as to who will be ruling over the club by the time next season gets underway.

Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale in March and, within a matter of days, the Russian oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to his nation’s invasion of Ukraine.

It is understood that a consortium led by Todd Boehly, the owner of Major League Baseball franchise LA Dodgers, is the preferred bidder and in pole position to claim the keys to Stamford Bridge after placing an offer worth £2.5billion.

That is despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe tabling a last-gasp £4.25billion proposal, with Tom Crotty – a director at the Ratcliffe-owned chemicals producer Ineos Group – confirming the bid was ‘rejected out of hand’.

According to Forbes, Boehly is worth a staggering £3.6billion and Chelsea could become the latest sports club to add to his portfolio as, as well as owning the LA Dodgers, he is a minority shareholder in NBA giants Los Angeles Lakers.

However, the sale of Chelsea has been thrown into doubt as Abramovich is attempting to restructure the deal in order to reclaim the £1.5billion he loaned the club despite the UK government insisting the Blues will fail to change hands unless it is completely certain the Russian will not receive any of the proceeds.
