Newcastle: 'Brilliant boost' for Howe regarding £20m ace

Having Callum Wilson back for the final few games of the season will be a “brilliant boost” for Newcastle, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The striker has been ruled out since December with a calf problem but is expected to return next month.

It’s been a frustrating campaign for the frontman, who’s not played since tearing his calf in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United just after Christmas.

Wilson, who joined Newcastle for £20m from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020, is still the club’s top goalscorer despite missing just under half of the Premier League season having suffered a hamstring problem earlier in the campaign which forced him to miss the whole of September.

But the Telegraph believe that Wilson recently started running again when Newcastle were out in Dubai during the last break back in January and is expected to increase his workload over the coming weeks.

Since Wilson got injured, Newcastle have signed Chris Wood, although the £25m January arrival has scored just once in 10 appearances for the Toon Army.

Wood did score twice while on international duty with New Zealand on Monday, although O’Rourke said that Wilson’s return is a major lift for Eddie Howe’s side.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s a brilliant boost for Newcastle to have Callum Wilson fit for the final few weeks of the season.”

According to the Telegraph, the 30-year-old is targeting a comeback for the trip to Norwich on 23 April.

Should that prove the case, Wilson will miss the game at Tottenham on Sunday week and then the home games with Wolves, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace, but could play the final five fixtures.
