Newcastle: £40k-a-week star now has 'question mark' over St James' Park future

Jamaal Lascelles‘ future at Newcastle United is in doubt, believes Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies captain has been in and out of Eddie Howe’s starting XI, and Downie has suggested that he could leave in the summer.

The i reported earlier this month that Newcastle could be tempted to listen to offers for Lascelles in the upcoming transfer window.

The 28-year-old has been a regular at St James’ Park down the years, making 25 appearances for the Tyneside club this season.

However, he is no longer an automatic starter in central defence, with Howe often going with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in Newcastle’s recent fixtures, like the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.

And with the Premier League outfit able to buy another centre-back soon when the transfer window opens, Lascelles could be about to find himself in even more trouble.

Downie thinks Lascelles’ situation is one to watch this summer, telling GIVEMESPORT that there is now a question mark over his future at St James’ Park.

Speaking to GMS, the Sky Sports journalist said: “I have to say, I think there’s a question mark over his long-term future at the club, and I think that will be a really interesting one in the summer as to whether he stays or goes.

“He’s been there for a long time, he loves the club and he loves the city. I think he’s a good captain; the way he has reacted to being left out the team has been exemplary.”

Now being backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Newcastle have the means to significantly improve their backline, and it seems like that is what they are going to do this summer if they are planning to listen to offers for Lascelles.
