Newcastle: £30m signing would give Guimaraes more 'freedom' at St James' Park

Newcastle United can give Bruno Guimaraes more freedom to attack by signing Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Tyneside club are currently being linked with the 26-year-old, and O’Rourke believes he could complement Eddie Howe’s January addition nicely.

According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle are planning to make a £30m swoop for Hojbjerg when the transfer window is open again.

The same outlet claims that Howe is intent on strengthening his squad and that the Dane is high on his list of targets.

Midfield is already an area the Magpies boss has bolstered after he recently brought in Guimaraes from Lyon in a deal worth over £40m.

However, it appears that he is still not completely satisfied with his options in the middle of the park as Newcastle prepare to make a move for Hojbjerg.

O’Rourke thinks Newcastle signing Hojbjerg could free up Guimaraes and allow him to go forward more often.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “He could be somebody who could maybe do that for Bruno Guimaraes, give him more freedom to go forward and attack, because Hojbjerg is obviously more of a sitting defensive midfielder.

“I think, at Southampton and Tottenham, he’s proved that he is a good, top Premier League player who can fit that role.”

He has been a real combative figure in the middle of the park for Tottenham this season, with manager Antonio Conte feeling that the Denmark international does not get enough attention.
