Newcastle: £20m Howe favourite now 'expected to stay' at St James' Park

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson will probably stay at St James’ Park this summer, says Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Tyneside club are currently being linked with several forwards, but Downie still expects the 30-year-old to remain a part of Eddie Howe’s side.

Wilson has been out of action since December after picking up a calf injury in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United; however, there is an expectation that he will make a return before the end of the season.

While upcoming games against Crystal Palace and Norwich City are likely to come too soon, Howe has refused to rule out the possibility of the Englishman being available for the fixtures afterwards.

“I don’t think either [Wilson or Kieran Trippier] will be involved next week, whether that’s Crystal Palace or Norwich,” the Newcastle boss recently told The Northern Echo and other outlets. “Maybe after those games, who knows? I’m not putting a game on it.”

With the Magpies managing to pick up points without Wilson, though, winning last time out against Leicester City, there is obviously no need to rush him back.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Sky Sports journalist said: “He loves playing for the club, and the fans love him as well. So there’s a good relationship, and he’s obviously got a very, very close bond with Howe. I’d probably expect him to stay in the summer.”

Wilson’s injury problems are a concern, but he is still a player worth keeping around.
