Man Utd: 18m star tipped to 'try and save his Old Trafford career' in next seven games

Jesse Lingard is fighting to save his Manchester United career, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 32-cap England international is out of contract this summer and could therefore end his 22-year affiliation with the Red Devils at the end of the season.

It’s been a campaign to forget for the £18m-rated attacker, who’s played under 500 minutes of football for his boyhood club having been restricted to just four starts across all competitions.

Incredibly, Lingard has been an unused substitute on 18 occasions, with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga often preferred to him in the wide areas.

But Lingard was given a rare opportunity to impress against Norwich on Saturday, making just his second Premier League start of the campaign.

He would last just 62 minutes after he was surprisingly replaced by Nemanja Matic despite United chasing a late winner, but he had already left his mark on the game.

According to WhoScored, he was only United’s seventh-best performer on the day, but during his time on the pitch he managed to contribute two shots on target, four key passes and 49 successful passes.

Lingard, who’s played 230 games for United will be hoping to keep his place in the starting XI when Ralf Rangnick’s side travel to Liverpool on Wednesday, and Jones reckons that with seven games remaining in the season, the ex-West Ham loanee is now fighting to save his career at Old Trafford.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he might take this between his teeth and really go for it over the next few games and try and save his Old Trafford career.”

“Next season’s massive for Jesse Lingard, he can’t sit around again for another year, he’s a very good player.”
