New Wishaw boss Martin O'Neill aims to steady ship after debut defeat

New Wishaw boss Martin O’Neill tasted defeat on his dugout debut but hopes he can add experience to the squad at the Beltane this season to steady the ship.

Former Wishaw and Kilmarnock defender O’Neill took the reins last week, replacing David Dunn after his resignation at the start of the month, and he arrives having been boss of Blantyre Victoria’s under-20 side.

His reign started with a 4-2 defeat at Lugar Boswell Thistle on Saturday, which sees the club exit the South Challenge Cup at the second round stage.

He also takes over with Wishy in 13th spot and three points off the foot of the West of Scotland Second Division, following six defeats in the opening eight games.

Wishaw don’t play again until September 30 at home to league leaders Ardrossan Winton Rovers, so that is a welcome break that will allow O’Neill to bolster his squad for their survival push.

He said: “For me it is about seeing if we can stay in the league in the short-term, but also look at trying to build something for next season, in terms of trying to progress, getting a good blend of young players coming through with some experienced guys.

“I know the club really well. I used to play with the club about 20 years ago, so I’ve got a good relationship with [club secretary] Robert Watson, who has been instrumental in keeping the club alive.

“I’m a local guy, I stay in Motherwell, and the club has a good reputation for bringing youth through so that has been the attraction for me.

“Looking at Saturday in isolation, the team is ravaged by injuries and one or two guys being on holiday so we were always going to be up against it.
