'New start for me' - Xavier Amaechi on Hamburg return after Bolton Wanderers loan last season

Xavier Amaechi believes he has a 'new start' at Hamburg after coming off the bench to assist a goal in his side's opening game of the season which follows a loan spell last season at Bolton Wanderers.

The 21-year-old spent the whole of last campaign on loan at Wanderers from the German second division side. The former Arsenal youngster arrived initially on deal last summer, which was then extended in January.

But Amaechi made only a dozen appearances in all competitions and scored once in the League One draw against Cheltenham Town. His time at Wanderers saw him miss large spells of the season owing to injury.

He suffered a fractured metatarsal in pre-season last year which kept him out of action until November. A hamstring strain in January also meant a spell on the sidelines.

Wanderers brought in reinforcements in the January transfer window and also changed formation around that time. Amaechi made just one start and three substitute appearances for Wanderers in 2022.

The Whites confirmed that Amaechi would not return to the club this summer and he has now returned to parent club Hamburg. The German side's season began over the weekend with a trip to Eintracht Braunschweig.

Tim Walter's side won 2-0 thanks to goals from Robert Glatzel. Amaechi came off the bench on the hour mark and ended up grabbing an assist for Glatzel's second goal.

And the winger is glad to be back playing football again after a few months since he last turned out in competitive action. But Amaechi, whose Hamburg deal runs until next summer, has vowed it is a new start for him at the German side.
