New Sheffield Wednesday recruit David Stockdale has already proven his worth
There was a moment in the first half of Sheffield Wednesday's friendly with Bournemouth that perfectly summed up David Stockdale's character. The Owls pressed for an instant response after Lewis Cook's deflected opener and midfield dynamo Fisayo Dele-Bashiru wriggled his way into the box.
Dele-Bashiru got himself into a good shooting position but the Cherries defence found a way to snuff out the danger. Summer signing Stockdale watched the action unfold from the other end of the pitch and could be heard shouting to his team mates after the missed opportunity: "Great reaction after going behind. Always have the belief we are going to do that."
Belief is not something Stockdale lacks. There is a reason why the Yorkshireman has won multiple promotions in his career and appears to be getting better the older he gets. He is a confident player and a model pro.
Ex-Fulham and Brighton and Hove Albion shot-stopper Stockdale chalked up 18 clean sheets at Wycombe Wanderers last year as the Chairboys suffered play-off heartache at Wembley. The 36-year-old was one of Wycombe's standout performers in their run to the final.
Stockdale has been around in football long enough to know that there will always be bumps in the road and different challenges teams have to overcome if they are to be successful. After coming up just short with Wycombe last season, Stockdale is determined to help lead Wednesday back into the Championship.
Speaking to the club’s in-house media team, Stockdale said: "Promotion is my aim. It was last year; it was the year before. I’m not here for money. I’m not here for fame. I’m obviously not here for fashion. I’m here for medals and that’s my one drive."
It has not taken Stockdale long to settle in at S6. His
