New Phil Foden position is developing a scarily good Man City partnership

It hasn't been the greatest start to the season for Phil Foden but Tuesday's performance against Sevilla may be the start of something exciting.

Foden isn't the only player not to have hit his best yet, Manchester City as a whole have started slowly with a couple of draws and some scares already. Jack Grealish has made little impact or been sidelined, while Riyad Mahrez hasn't rediscovered his excellent form of last season, which is why Foden has remained in the starting XI despite being below par.

Pep Guardiola admitted as much following the 4-0 Champions League victory. "Phil has an incredible thing", the manager told BT Sport.

"Lately he is not playing so good like normal but he always does a job and run and fight and he's stable for the team. I'm pretty sure today the goal and assist he has done will help him.

"Phil's position is dynamic and [so is] his work ethic. We have to learn a lot. You can play badly because you are human but you never, never, never can avoid doing what Phil does every single game and that's why he deserves to play."

Despite not being at his absolute peak, Foden has still managed to be effective. He should certainly have more assists for the times he could have teed Erling Haaland but he still has two to his name in the Premier League as well as a single goal. That's pretty good for a player not playing at their best, but it was against Sevilla where he truly returned to the level that has come to be expected of him.
