New England Patriots: Bill Belichick reportedly turned down chance to bring back former OC

NFL insider Albert Breer has been discussing the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick’s thought process on the offensive side of the ball. 

After something of a rough 2020 season, in which the New England Patriots went 7-9 and suffered their first losing season since 2000, 2021 was the first step that the Patriots and Bill Belichick needed to take in order to get them back to the levels of dominance that we’ve come to expect from them after their 20-year dynasty of the new millenium. 

With rookie quarterback Mac Jones leading the way, the Patriots were able to make it back to the playoffs with a 10-7 record before being ousted by the division rival Buffalo Bills, just giving us the first signs that the team isn’t going to slink away quietly into the night.

However, their actions this offseason have certainly raised a few eyebrows when it comes to what the team is going to look like in the 2022 NFL season.

Following offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ decision to leave New England and take over as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Belichick and the Patriots haven’t had any one with much experience being able to call plays on that side of the ball.

Assistant coaches Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, along with Belichick have been calling the plays, but with Patricia and Belichick specialising in defence and Judge on special teams, you get the sense that the decision to not hire an offensive-minded coordinator could come back to haunt them especially if it stunts Jones in his development.

And according to Albert Breer, the Patriots had the chance to bring someone on board, only for Belichick to decline the offer.
