New Annan Athletic boss aiming for progress in first season in charge

Annan player boss Wullie Gibson summed up his target for the season ahead in one word – progression.

The new Galabank gaffer wants to see his team finish higher than last season and told how he’s hardly been off the phone since being appointed in a bid to recruit new players.

Gibson has also fixed up a pre-season clash at Morton for Saturday, July 6 as preparations are ramped up.

He said: “On the back of last season I want progression.

“It was always going to be tough last term in a new league, with a new challenge up against some full time teams. But we managed to do very well.

“We don’t want to be scrapping about in the relegation area again, no club does. As a manager you want to set a target, but you have to be realistic and we are well capable of having another good season.”

Gibson has been busy with talks and moves regarding playing staff.

He said: “I have signed someone who will be massive for the club and at the moment we are just finalising that deal before it is announced.

“But I think it is a signing that will get the fans excited.

“I have retained Greg Fleming as my keeper coach.

“He won’t be my No.1 goalie, but the No.2 and looking after the No.1.

“We have Scott Hooper and Tam Muir here plus Aidan Smith and I have signed on and will play.

“Although, I know things change in football but as I said at the end of last season, my legs will tell me when it is time to stop playing.

“I have signed Tommy Goss on a two-year deal.

“And I am working on appointing an assistant manager and as soon as I confirm that then he will be announced.

“I have hardly put the phone down since getting the job.”
