Neville claims ‘obliterated’ Man City set for ‘shock’ in title race with Liverpool

Gary Neville believes the Premier League title race is far from over as he reckons Manchester City are set for a “shock” over their next two games.

Pep Guardiola’s side brushed Newcastle aside 5-0 on Sunday, with Wolves and West Ham next up.

And they will face the two European hopefuls without Ruben Dias, who was taken off at half-time in the win over Newcastle, as well as John Stones, who is also out for the season.

Guardiola will likely have to turn to make do with a makeshift centre-back partnership for the Wolves game on Wesnesday, with Nathan Ake also said to be a doubt.

And Neville believes the way in which City’s defence has been “obliterated” by injury will be significant in the title race, as the reigning champions face “awkward” sides who can “hurt” them as they look to retain their crown.

“I do believe Wolves or West Ham could shock Manchester City,” Neville told The Gary Neville Podcast. “With Ruben Dias injured, they are going to teams who have got systems of play that can hurt City. Both teams have had good seasons. They are awkward. City will need to be at their best.

“The centre-back partnership has been obliterated. The injury is a boost for Liverpool’s chances. I do think there is something left in this title race. It won’t go plain sailing to the end.”

City travel to West Ham on Sunday after the game at Molineux, before hosting Aston Villa on the final day.

Liverpool meanwhile, travel to Villa and Southampton, before ending their campaign against Wolves at Anfield.

Neville added: “If City get through the next two, they’ll win it. Wolves or West Ham have to pull points off City but it’s not over.
