Netflix viewers compare new true-crime documentary to Tiger King as they ask 'what did I watch'

Netflix have released a new three part docu-series The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga.

It follows the life of Elvis Presley impersonator and janitor Kevin Curtis, who was on a mission to "expose the dark underbelly of Tupelo" and looks at how conspiracy theories led to his arrest in 2013, as well the grand effort to try to clear his name, and an unexpected rival. The series is based in Tupelo, Mississippi the birth place of the real Elvis Presley, a town that's no stranger to impersonators of the star.

Kevin's life is turned upside down when he discovers a severed head in a hospital fridge. What follows is a small-town feud, internet conspiracy theories, and a dark tale that eventually spirals. The twists and turns in this series are designed to keep viewers guessing and questioning.

Viewers have taken to the Reddit thread r/netflix to share that they're "increasingly frustrated" with the people in the docu-series, all while hailing it "the best doc" they've watched on Netflix this year.

One viewer compared The Kings of Tupelo to cult-status Netflix documentary Tiger King that became widely popular in 2020, they commented that it's "filled with people who contradict themselves and each other, people who lie as easily as they breathe, and just insane story u/Apprehensiveraven", before adding that they spent the whole time "screaming 'why'" at the TV.

Another echoed: "Watching as I type, it’s like a train wreck. You know you shouldn’t watch it, but you just can’t stop u/DryVanilla9319", with a third viewer admitting: "I still can't make up my mind as to whether this series was very good, or very bad u/LKS983."
