Netflix confirms future of anime live-action series One Piece

Netflix has confirmed that live-action anime series One Piece will be returning for a second season. The show, based on the popular Japanese manga by author Eiichiro Oda, debuted on the streaming service on August 31.

It fast became the global number one on Netflix, with 37.8 million views amassed in less than two weeks since its release. The series reached the top 10 in 93 countries and debuted at number one in 46.

One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy on his quest to become King of Pirates as he picks up his own team of misfits on the way, known as the Straw Hats. Iñaki Godoy stars as Laffey in the live-action series.

He is joined by actor Mackenyu Maeda as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami and Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The anime originally debuted in the Weekly Shōnen Jump anthology magazine some 26 years ago.

The adventure series spawned a flurry of on-screen adaptations; a long-running anime series, 15 animated films and 40 video games - and finally, its own live-action version. In a special video message, Oda, who also executive produces One Piece revealed there would be more to come.

He said: “It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it. To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much.

"Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward."

Taking to Twitter, fans were delighted to hear the news. @RealonX said:
