Nemanja Matic to formally complete Man Utd exit on Monday with medical booked at next club

Nemanja Matic is about to formally end his Manchester United career by signing for AS Roma on Monday, reports are revealing.

Matic announced recently that the 2021-22 season would be his last with Manchester United. After five seasons at Old Trafford, it is time for him to move on. And it soon became clear where he would be ending up.

Rather predictably, Matic was quickly linked with a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Roma. But those early indications were true all along.

Recently, it was reported that a deal was virtually sealed between Matic and Roma. There has been some confusion over when an announcement would arrive, though.

Now, clarification has arrived. Many sources in Italy, led by Corriere Dello Sport, have revealed that Matic’s medical will take place in Rome on Monday.

He will also put his signature on the contract that will officialise his third spell working under Mourinho. Then, he should be able to enjoy his break in peace.

It means Matic’s Manchester United career is approaching its formal end. With his next club lined up, both the Red Devils and the Serbia international can move on.

United still need to find a replacement for Matic in defensive midfield. They are looking at a number of options in similar territory, such as Frenkie de Jong.

Finding someone with Matic’s characteristics off the ball will be tough, though. His new club know it, having struggled to find a holding player for Mourinho over the past 12 months.

As such, the former Chelsea, United and Tottenham coach has turned to the tried and trusted with Matic. Next season, the 33-year-old will be playing in Serie A for the first time in his career.
