Neil Warnock reveals whether he would take the Reading FC job

Former Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has revealed that he wouldn’t take the Reading job with Paul Ince now at the helm, speaking about the relegation battlers live on talkSPORT with Jim White and Simon Jordan.

The 73-year-old was last in management in the early stages of November with Boro – but was replaced by Chris Wilder with the former Sheffield United manager suddenly becoming available.

Many would now consider this is a shrewd move considering how well the Teesside outfit have been performing under the stewardship of Wilder, but it was seen as harsh by some at the time with Warnock leaving the club in a better state than he found it in.

Steering the club away from danger during the latter stages of the 2019/20 campaign, he secured a respectable top-half finish the following campaign, though he did struggle at times in the early parts of this term having seen the club invest in several new players last summer.

However, his best achievements have arguably come away from the Riverside Stadium, achieving promotion with the likes of Sheffield United and QPR and helping to keep Rotherham United afloat in the 2015/16 season.

His track record led many Reading fans to call for his appointment with the Royals currently in a relegation battle – and though the veteran hinted that he entertained the idea of coming to the Select Car Leasing Stadium after Veljko Paunovic’s sacking – he all but dismissed any chance of him taking up the role with Ince now taking the reins in Berkshire.

Asked whether he would accept the top job, Warnock said: “No, Paul’s doing it now.

“At the time, when I saw the manager had gone, I just thought, ‘what a good club’.

“I’ve always had a right banter with their fans.
