Neil Alexander to be named new Motherwell goalkeeping coach as former star makes his cinch return

Neil Alexander is close to a return to football as goalkeeping coach at Motherwell.

The former Scotland, Rangers, Hearts and Cardiff City keeper is set to join Steven Hammell’s backroom team a year after leaving a similar position at Dundee United. Alexander had spent three years at Tannadice but left abruptly last summer before ending the season at Dunfermline under John Hughes.

Now the 44-year-old will start afresh in Lanarkshire where he will work with Scotland squad keeper Liam Kelly, Aston Oxborough and Matt Connelly. Scott Fox, who had been taking the goalkeepers at Fir Park, moved out on loan to Queen of the South on deadline day. Alexander stepped into the void this week ahead of Well’s trip to face Ross County on Saturday.

And his appointment is expected to be confirmed soon. Another ex-Rangers keeper, Andy Dibble, had been appointed at Fir Park just two months ago. But he followed Graham Alexander out the door when the former boss left in the aftermath of July’s European exit to Sligo Rovers.
