Neighbours rush to help after 'horrific' Oldham car crash as victim, 26, is named

Neighbours rushed to help a young man who was killed in a 'horrific' car crash in Oldham on Sunday night (June 2). The victim, now named as 26-year-old Atif Zaheer, lost his life after a car was ploughed into a number of other vehicles along Greenacres Road at around 11.40pm.

Greater Manchester Police believe the car crashed into two stationary cars, causing it to overturn. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Atif was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, also in their 20s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They remain in police custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for Rochdale Coroner's Court confirmed to the M.E.N that a file in the name of Atif Zaheer had been referred to their office on Monday (June 3).

Eileen Shaw, who lives in nearby Derwent Walk, said she heard a ‘horrific bang’ at about 11.30pm. “It was unbelievable,” she told the Manchester Evening News. "When I came down, everybody was on the street. Everyone came running out, it was hectic.”

Ms Shaw said she also saw a forensic tent in the middle of the road shortly after as emergency services worked at the scene. “I can’t believe it, it’s a shame," she added.

Another resident, Ghous Ghoulam, also of Derwent Walk, described the scene as a ‘disaster’. He said he witnessed a man lying in the road while people gave first aid to him.

“I heard the bang and car alarms. It was a big sound," he said. "There were about 70-80 people who came out into the street. One car was on top of another and the Range Rover had flipped over. It’s a disaster. It’s very sad.”
