Neighbours asked to leave homes as police hunt for 'guns and grenades' on playing fields

Some residents have been advised to leave their homes as police begin a search for 'guns and grenades' in Salford. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they have received intelligence regarding possible 'weapons' on Duchy Road playing fields near the Irlams o' th' Height area of the city.

A large cordon is now being put in place around the field. The force said that 'as a precautionary measure, some residents within the area are being spoken to by officers about the possibility of moving to temporary accommodation.'

Salford Council has been put on standby to assist any residents who do choose to leave. It's not yet known how many properties have been advised to evacuate.

GMP say officers and partner agencies will be in the area 'over the weekend' as the searches are carried out. It follows 'reports regarding the location of potential firearms and grenades' at the playing fields which also border Stanhope Road.

Chief Inspector Jamie Pearson, from GMP, said: "While we have spoken to some residents about leaving their property, this is purely a precautionary measure, as officers begin to search for what has been reported as weapons within the area.

"I understand that this will cause concern within the community, but there is no specific threat and is related to intelligence gathered.

"Local residents who choose to leave their homes will be supported appropriately, and we are working with partners to ensure this is done swiftly and efficiently. Officers are expected to be in the area for the weekend and will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have."
