The record for the largest ever Lotto win was set in April 2016 when an anonymous player scooped up £35m. In January 2016, two lucky ticket-holders each bagged £33m.

Prior to that, a main Lotto game jackpot of £42,008,610 was drawn in January 1996 and divided between three anonymous winners, each receiving £14,002,870. A single ticket won £26.4m on the New Year's Eve lotto in 2016.

The UK National Lottery made its debut on November 19, 1994. Half of all money spent by players goes into the prize fund, with 28% allocated to good causes, 12% to the Government as duty, 5% to retailers, and the remaining 5% has operated the lottery throughout its history.
