A nan glassed a woman in Wetherspoons after drunkenly picking a fight and calling her a 'state'.

Kelly Lane "lost control" and attacked her innocent victim who was spared "potentially horrendous injuries" only by her spectacles, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

A sentencing today (Friday) was told that the 39-year-old and Nicola Radford had been seated at separate tables in the Nine Arches, a JD Wetherspoon pub in Newton-le-Willows, at around 10.30pm on October 1 last year. But Lane, of Lloyd Crescent in the town, began making unsavoury comments about her fellow customer, remarking: "Look at the state of her, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Sarah Gruffydd, prosecuting, described how an altercation then ensued and the defendant thrust a glass into the complainant's face. Ms Radford required overnight hospital treatment as a result of the incident, having suffered cuts to the face, lip and inside of the mouth and bruising.

Lane has three previous convictions for four offences, including battery in 2006 and 2013. Stella Hayden, defending, told the court that her client had been employed by a hygiene company for several years and added: "To some extent, the loss of her control that evening can be seen as out of character and does bely the hard working, family orientated individual that she ordinarily is."

The nan admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a count of criminal damage in relation to Ms Radford's glasses. Lane appeared stunned and put her head in her hands in the dock as she was handed an immediate imprisonment of one year and a seven-year restraining order.
