'My understanding...' - Journalist claims Newcastle 'still lurking' for 'phenomenon'

Newcastle United are still showing an interest in the Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer, according to Ben Jacobs.

The journalist was speaking on the latest Done Deal Show on the Football Terrace YouTube channel to discuss the future of the 25-year-old.

Leicester City have had a slow start to the summer window and the future of the main midfielder is still under speculation with the likes of Arsenal also being linked with Tielemans.

Talk surrounding the Belgian’s future comes amid his contract running down to its final year at the King Power Stadium whilst an extension seems unlikely, according to reports.

Whilst the Gunners may be able to offer Tielemans European football for this season, Jacobs still believes those on Tyneside are keeping an eye on the situation:

(50:30) “And then Newcastle are still lurking as well. So my understanding is that, of course, Leicester would love Tielemans to re-sign, but I still think that he will go somewhere this window.”

TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…

The Toon continues to be linked with a number of midfielders this summer with Lucas Paqueta another name being credited with interest from Tyneside.

And it seems as if both Newcastle and the Gunners may be targeting the same two players in this position so it may be interesting to see whether movement from the north Londoners may spring the Toon into action.

However, we think Eddie Howe’s side have bigger issues to solve first with a new striker and winger yet to be added to their side this summer.

So we will be interested to see whether a player like the midfield ‘phenomenon’ is something which Dan Ashworth keeps in mind for the latter stages of the window.
