'My son was in a coma for months after a horror crash - it's a miracle he survived'

The family of a teenager who was unresponsive for months after a serious car crash say it is a 'miracle' he has survived. Cohen Gareis was one of five people inside a car which hit a wall before rolling over last June.

He had just turned 17 when he suffered a severe brain injury as a result of the smash in Meltham, West Yorkshire. Cohen, who was a passenger, was rushed to hospital following the crash which also left another person badly injured.

His family feared he may not survive. But after months in rehabilitation, Cohen is making good progress, Yorkshire Live reports.

Stevie said: "He's now in rehabilitation and has been since October. It has left him with a severe traumatic brain injury. He wasn't expected to live or wake up, after many cruel months he did.

"He's now relearning everything over again, the hope is that he will be able to walk again. He's eating, talking (some), using his phone. He still has a way to go but only 10% wake up from his catastrophic injuries.

"He's doing the unimaginable, even though he has a way to go and he's expected to be in rehabilitation for some months yet. He's a miracle and we are hopeful due to his strength and courage."

Cohen was initially taken to Sheffield's Northern
