Mutual Murray and Raducanu ally put in agonising spot as he reveals there's a tennis law about being 'selfish'

A mutual friend of Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray has revealed he has been put in an impossible situation in the wake of their scrapped mixed doubles clash at Wimbledon.

Liam Broady – the former world top 100 player who has reached the third round at SW19 twice – has weighed in on the storm which rained down in the wake of Raducanu removing herself from her duty with Murray, a decision which ended the iconic Scot's career at the tournament he has won on two different occasions. Raducanu herself is now out after being outgunned by qualifier Lulu Sun in three sets.

The call-off has become a national story when Murray's mum Judy replied to a tweet about Raducanu's decision and revealed her 'astonishment' – something she walked back and claimed her reply to tennis presenter Marcus Buckland was merely sarcasm. That claim was queried by tennis fans and now Broady admits he has also felt the weight of the fallout.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Broady said: "It's such a tough one. I'll be honest, I am friends with both of them, so. I am torn between both of them. One thing I was always taught from a very early age from my dad was life on the tour you've got to be selfish, to be one of the best singles players, you have got to look after yourself. Obviously, Emma took a medical timeout yesterday. Her body didn't look 100 per cent, she was having some issues with her back as well as her wrist over the past few days.

"On the other hand, it is so difficult for Andy. I think he wanted to play one more time at Wimbledon, which would have been so special for him and the fans.
