'Must be' - Gary Lineker sends message to James Maddison after Leicester City honour

Leicester City favourite Gary Lineker has tipped James Maddison for a place in the England squad in the near future.

Maddison was crowned City's Player of the Season at the annual awards dinner on Monday night after what has been a somewhat difficult campaign for a team hampered by illness and injuries in the first half of the campaign.

The attacking midfielder has scored 16 goals and assisted a further 10 across all competitions this season after struggling to find his form in the opening months before hitting his stride.

His form has seen him regularly tipped for a return to the England squad but he has so far been overlooked by national team boss Gareth Southgate, who has an abundance of options in the midfield and forward areas.

Tweeting after picking up the award at City, Maddison said: "So grateful to be voted your player of the season. Thank you foxes".

Lineker responded to Maddison with some words of praise and tip for an England call-up. He said: "Much deserved. You’ve been superbly consistent. Must be knocking on England’s door."

Also at the end-of-season awards dinner, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall picked up Players' Player and Young Player of the Season, while Youri Tielemans strike at Man United won him Goal of the Season. Shannon O'Brien won Player of the Season and Goal of the Season for the women's team.
