Murderer who stabbed teenager in the neck gets life sentence

A man was today starting a life sentence behind bars for the murder of a teenager he stabbed in the neck.

Knifeman Akbar Khan, 21, of Hyde Road in Gorton, Manchester, was told by a judge he must serve a minimum of 20 years in custody. Khan stabbed Ibraheem Ali, 19, outside a shop on Stockport Road in Levenshulme during an ugly disturbance in January.

The pair and two others had been involved in a fight inside Wayne's Convenience Store before the shopkeeper ordered the men to leave. As he left, Mr Ali shouted at Khan, telling him: "Get out of the shop now you f****** p****, get out of the shop now I'll f****** kill you".

Khan stayed in the shop for a time before leaving, armed with a knife. He swung his arm at Mr Ali three times, connecting with his neck while using 'severe' force, a court heard. Mr Ali died of his injuries a week later after fighting for his life in hospital.

Following a three-week trial at Bolton Crown Court, Khan was found guilty of murder and sentenced today, Wednesday.

Police said after the sentencing hearing his claim of self-defence was rejected by the jury and he received two years in custody, to be served concurrently, for possession of the knife.

In a statement, GMP said: "Careful analysis of CCTV showed a scuffle inside the shop which spilled outside whereby Khan, who was brandishing a flick knife, lunged at Ibraheem, inflicting a catastrophic injury.

"Khan fled the scene in his car and then set about disposing of evidence including the knife, his clothing and his car.
