Munster Road Races put on hold as weekend weather soars towards 30 degrees

The action-packed few days of motorbike racing promised for this weekend have been postponed as the Cork Motorcycle Racing and Vintage Club announce that the Munster 100 Road Races can no longer go ahead as planned due to the extreme weather forecast.

The races were due to take place on August 13th and 14th in Glanmire. But with temperatures set to rise into the high 20s this week. With the temperatures forecasted for 28 to 29 degrees this weekend, the club announced on Wednesday that "we cannot stem the tide."

The hot weather has caused an "irreversible effect on sections of the road circuit" and the club say they are putting the safety of their riders first.

"Factoring this and the forecasted weather up to and including race weekend we have to take the safety of competitors in mind and make the decision to postpone the event," they announced.

It's a blow to those looking forward to heading out and watching the races after "Trojan work" to get the town ready for the event. It was to be the first return of the event since 2019. The club say they are looking towards a future date.

This weekend is also when the Ironman triathlon comes to Youghal, which, so far, hasn't announced any sort of postponement due to the heat. Kicking off on Thursday evening, the event seems to be going ahead as planned.

The big triathlon itself will be taking place on August 13th and 14th and with the insane heat forecast, it'll take a lot of power to get through.

Participants will be swimming 3.8km from Claycastle into Youghal before embarking on a 180km bike course through Ballycotton, Whitegate, and around before finishing with a 42.2km that ends back in the centre of Youghal.
