Munster 42-21 Cardiff: A fifth successive defeat for Dai Young's men who have not won away all season

Cardiff remain without an away win this season after producing a spirited display at Cork’s Musgrave Park, only to ultimately end up well beaten.

They played their part in an entertaining contest, taking an early 14-7 lead through tries from second row Seb Davies and centre Rey Lee Lo, with scrum-half Lloyd Williams also crossing after the break. But Munster’s power and attacking continuity ultimately told as they went over five times to claim a bonus point win that takes them up to second in the United Rugby Championship, with full-back Mike Haley and scrum-half Craig Casey both recording a brace.

For Dai Young’s men, it’s a fifth successive defeat and they have now won just two of their last 14 games in all competitions. They also suffered a series of injury blows as prop Dillon Lewis, full-back Hallam Amos and lock Rory Thornton had to leave the field, Wales tighthead Lewis departing with his arm in a makeshift jersey-sling.

They had made a dream start, opening the scoring with a well worked try from Seb Davies on just two minutes. After prop Rhys Carre crossed the gain-line in midfield, the ball was moved right where Amos made the break before feeding Davies who used his power to reach the line in the corner. Munster swiftly hit back through a touchdown from full-back Haley after a sustained passage of attacking that saw them go through countless phases, moving play from one side of the field to the other.

But the visitors were looking dangerous with ball in hand themselves and struck again on 12 minutes. There was more strong carrying from the impressive Carre and more great work from Amos who produced a superb offload out of the side-door to release Owen Lane.
