Mum followed abusive ex home and battered him after he had 'beaten her' throughout their relationship

A mum-of-three who used a broken bottle and a hammer to attack her abusive ex-boyfriend has been jailed.

Chantelle Hurst, 31, bludgeoned 41-year old Mark Seddon after following him home from Wigan town centre on Chistmas Eve in 2021, Bolton Crown Court heard on Thursday (January 25). The court heard the pair, from Leigh, had been involved in an abusive seven month relationship, and at the time of the attack Seddon was on bail and banned from going near Hurst.

Hurst admitted causing grievous bodily harm after it was alleged she stabbed her former partner with the jagged edge of a beer bottle and beat him with a hammer. He suffered severe cuts to his scalp which required 22 staples and defence wounds to his hand but he was discharged from hospital shortly afterwards. Hurst, of no fixed address, was jailed for 14 months.

At the time of the attack, Seddon was on bail having been banned from going near Hurst, and was ordered to wear an electronic tag. He gave a statement to police after the assault on him but subsequently declined to co-operate with the investigation.

The court heard the pair had had split up following a turbulent seven month relationship during which they lived together. Mark Stephenson, prosecuting, said it was 'accepted' the relationship was a 'toxic one' and there had been 'other incidents in which the defendant was not the protagonist'.

"They both had mood swings, one minute being fine and the next being violent towards each other," he continued. When the relationship ended, Mr Seddon was arrested and placed under an electronic monitoring system.
