Mum, 44, died after gastric sleeve operation in Turkey

A mum died after travelling to Turkey for a gastric sleeve operation, an inquest has heard.

Emma Morrissey, 44, made the trip to Antalya in July 2022 to have the surgery at the private Termessos Hospital. The inquest at Cheshire Coroner's Court in Warrington last month heard how she used the Cheshire-based health tourism company Regenesis Health Travel for all arrangements.

But during the procedure, the surgeon perforated Emma's abdomen with an instrument, eventually leading to her bleeding to death two days later on July 8, reports CheshireLive.

Although the area was packed in order to stem the bleed, no platelets for blood clotting were administered, the court heard.

Senior Coroner for Cheshire, Jacqueline Devonish, has raised several concerns with Regenesis in a prevention of future deaths report. Among them was the fact a surgery note was provided to the company by the hospital claimed that Emma's gastric sleeve procedure was stopped when the UK post-mortem confirmed that the operation was in fact completed.

The coroner also noted that the cause of Emma's death was recorded in Turkey as 'natural' but evidence to the contrary was heard during the inquest at Cheshire Coroner's Court in Warrington on August 31. As a result, her death was regarded as 'unnatural' with a narrative conclusion stating that she died due to "a massive uncontrolled bleed caused by an instrument perforation within the abdomen during surgery".
