Much-loved former Tonbridge Angels chairman Steve Churcher has died aged 68

Former Tonbridge Angels chairman Steve Churcher has died, aged 68, the club have announced.

Churcher, who was also Angels president, spent eight years as chairman between 2009 and 2017.

He oversaw the transition to community ownership during his tenure, while Tonbridge also won promotion to Conference South for the first time after winning the Isthmian Premier play-offs.

In a statement, Tonbridge said they were “devastated” to learn of Churcher’s death, describing him as a “much-loved and highly respected” man who “gave an immense amount to the football club”.

Tonbridge chair Sophie Purves said: “The club has lost a true friend and legend today.

“Steve put his heart and soul into Tonbridge Angels and achieved great things as chairman and more recently president.

“He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and we will miss him very much.

“This is a truly sad day for Tonbridge Angels but the great man, Steve Churcher, will be forever remembered with affection and admiration.”

Former Angels boss Steve McKimm, who was appointed by Churcher in 2014, paid tribute on Twitter.

He wrote: “Gave me my first job in management. What a lovely man, which is why my family and I had stayed friends with [him]. So glad I visited him last week to reminisce and have a laugh. RIP Mr Chairman.”

Ex-Tonbridge and Gillingham defender Leon Legge said: “RIP Steve. Top bloke and truly loved the club.”
