Mountain rescue teams rescue seriously injured man after horror fall at quarry

Mountain rescue teams rescued a seriously injured man after a horror fall at a quarry in Oldham. Emergency services raced to the incident, in which a man in his 80s had 'fallen from height' at Moorgate Quarry in Uppermill on Tuesday afternoon (August 13).

The Manchester Evening News previously reported that the man had been left with serious injuries and rushed to hospital from the scene, with police and paramedics closing off the area.

The Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, who were also deployed to the incident, have now revealed how specialist teams used a rope hauling system to hoist the man to safety from the quarry pit after falling 'a considerable distance'.

A statement shared online said: "On Tuesday afternoon the Team were contacted by Greater Manchester Police to assist with a gentleman who had fallen a considerable distance in a disused quarry near Uppermill in Saddleworth.

"Medics from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust and the North West Air Ambulance service were on scene quickly to provide medical aid. They were later assisted by the North West Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

"Due to the location of the incident, the team were tasked with the extrication of the patient. The patient was placed in a vacuum mattress for immobilisation and then placed on a team stretcher. Using a rope hauling system, the stretcher and patient were brought out of the quarry pit and carried a short distance to the ambulance for the onward journey to hospital."

An air ambulance, as well as the HART team, incident response units and an operational commander were also dispatched to the scene of the rescue mission.
