Pep Guardiola now hot favourite to be next England manager after latest Man City twist

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has emerged as the new favourite to replace Gareth Southgate and become the new England boss.

Southgate ended his eight-year spell in charge of the Three Lions after the 2-1 European Championship final defeat to Spain. The former Middlesbrough boss managed 102 games for his country, leading them to two consecutive Euros finals.

His departure in July led to the country making their early predictions on who they think will be the next head coach going forward. Guardiola, who is under contract until 2025, emerged as a popular candidate and it's been reported that The Football Association would consider waiting for the Spaniard to become available.

And according to bookmakers bet365, Guardiola is now the favourite to become the next permanent boss at Wembley Stadium. Over a thousand bets have been placed on the Man City boss to replace Southgate, seeing his price drop from 25/1 to 2/1 in the last week or so.

bet365's Steve Freeth said: "Lee Carsley may currently be in the England hot-seat after the departure of Gareth Southgate but our customers are seemingly telling us he's only keeping it warm for one person and that person is Pep Guardiola.

"It feels like it would be quite a coup by the FA to get somebody of the quality and stature of Pep and, with so much uncertainty regarding the Spaniard's future at Manchester City, a lot of punters are putting two and two together with the price tumbling from 25/1 into 2/1 over the last week or so."
