MotoGP Mugello: ‘Win more important that records’ for Acosta

Red Bull KTM Ajo celebrated again with its rookie star Pedro Acosta after the4 Spaniard claimed his maiden Moto2 victory at Mugello.

The celebrations created a new record for the Spanish teenager, who dominated from the opening lap, as he becomes the youngest ever winner of an intermediate class race, in just his eighth of his rookie season.

Launching from the front row, Acosta took the holeshot and immediately set a high pace. Flexbox HP40’s Aron Canet was firmly on his tail before crashing out at the halfway point and leaving the Ajo rider with a dominant two-second lead. Havig coasted to victory in the closing stages, Acosta crossed the finish line for his debut victory four-tenths clear of Joe Roberts on the Italtrans machine with Honda’s Ai Ogura completing the podium.

“I am very happy to have finally got this victory,” Acosta said on Sunday. “Difficult way to be here but finally we arrive! Finally we are there. It took more than I would have liked, but the difficult times help you learn and enjoy the good moments even more.

“The race was tough. Canet I think was one of the stronger guys in track today but the racing is like this. It is the first contest that I’ve led from start to finish, and I had to work hard to stay focused. The mistakes we made at previous rounds have helped us learn, progress and be here today.

“Not going to be more easy but I’m more calm,’ he said of the approaching races now the win was under his belt.

“Finally when you do one time you know that you can do it. Was hard to be world champion and then struggle a lot to do a fifth place. Like this, I think we are going to be more relaxed.”

His victory came just four days after his 18th birthday, with the champagne celebrations firmly enjoyed,
