Motherwell star Ross Tierney: Moult will push van Veen to be even better

Ross Tierney reckons Louis Moult's arrival will only make striker Kevin van Veen even better as the two look set to battle it out for the start striker tag at Fir Park this season.

Club legend Moult returns to the club on a season-long loan from Burton Albion - five years after a prolific spell first stint at Fir Park - looking to pick up where he left off, while van Veen has hit impressive form early on this term, netting seven goals in seven goals.

Saturday's 0-0 draw with Dundee United came just too early for Moult after all the drama of his post-deadline day signing, but the Steelmen could maybe have done with his services as chances went abegging against the Tangerines.

Van veen saw a penalty saved, then hit the crossbar before a late strike was deflected wide.

But Tierney, who teed up the Dutchman superbly for his strike that came back off the woodwork, believes Moult and van Veen can bring out the best in each other.

The Irishman said: "I wasn’t here when Louis was here before but I’m sure he’ll come in and push Kev.

"Louis is going to come in and give him competition but we weren’t saying before the game ‘Louis has signed so that gives us an extra buzz’.

"He wasn’t on the pitch. There were 20 players in the squad and he wasn’t one of them. We knew we had the players to get the win and unfortunately we didn’t but I think the performance was unbelievable.’

"Kev’s for seven in seven, so he’s a proven goalscorer himself.

"Last year you could see the goals he scored. He scores all types of goals and he is a joy to play with.

"You saw on Wednesday him scoring a hat-trick but nothing seemed to go in for him in this game.

"It was one of those days."
