Motherwell finishing in seventh place would be 'massive' for transfer budget

Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell hopes they can go some way to cementing seventh place in the Premiership today and boost his transfer kitty for next season.

The Steelmen welcome Kettlewell's former side, Ross County, to Fir Park where win would, at worst, keep them one point clear of rivals Livingston in the battle to finish at the best of the bottom six going into the last two games of the campaign.

And seventh over eighth place could make a big difference in the summer, as they look to strengthen for a top six push and postential European football next season.

Kettlewell said: "It helps the football club, it’s as simple as that. We can't imporve our league placing, but we can hopefully cement it, as difficult as that will be in the final three games we have.

"But is massive for us, it is huge. There isn’t this endless supply of money. We don't have someone who keeps plooughing in money, we don't have that situation.

"So it’s about us being as proactive as we possibly can with our business, our position in the league.

“There’s only a couple of ways a club can improve the finance they bring in – you either sell a player, you go on a cup run, or you have a good league placing. There's no other way that football clubs dramtically change the financial picture.

“Yes, you want to freshen up the squad and put your own stamp on it, but the ability to do that can be limited at times, so the more I can bring in with a league placing or a cup run next season, that helps those scenarios.”
