Motherwell captain thrilled with 'incredible' Scotland journey as Fir Park form frustrations explained
There's a potential trip to Qatar on the cards - but Stephen O'Donnell says his Motherwell form has to be at the forefront of his mind.
The right-back made his 25th and 26th appearances for Scotland during the international break, coming on as a substitute in friendly draws with Austria and Poland.
He has been a mainstay in former Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke's plans with the national team, although Everton's Nathan Patterson has emerged as the number one choice in the right-wing-back role recently.
O'Donnell is thrilled to be part of the squad each time he goes, and making the landmark 25-cap mark is something he is proud of.
But amid a mixed season at domestic level with Motherwell, the star from Wishaw says he needs to produce the goods at Fir Park to merit a potential spot in a World Cup.
Scotland will meet England, Iran and USA this winter at Qatar 2022 if they get past Ukraine and Wales in the June play-offs, but the 'Well skipper said: "I need to focus on playing.
"There's no better way to get attention than playing in a team that is getting good results. So let's hope that is the case.
"I think the international stuff has been there for the last few years, but I just need to focus on myself. At times this season I think I might have let myself down performance-wise with Motherwell.
"If I knew why I would never have a bad game. It's an exciting time and it will be far more exciting if we are actually in it.
"When I got very close to that landmark (25 caps), it was a target I wanted to achieve, and thankfully I have managed to do that.
"It would have been a bit nicer in a competitive match but that's me being picky. I am delighted to still be part of and hopefully with a good run of results, I can add to the 26.
