Motherwell Athletics Club put in the miles to mark Scottish National Running Week

Motherwell Athletic Club runners put in the miles as part of the first-ever Scottish National Running Week earlier this month.

The club hosted a 5k open social run at Strathclyde Country Park, with over 65 runners attending and plenty of volunteers on hand to help as well.

National Running Week was held from June 5-11 June by the charity Athletics Trust Scotland, with the aim of raising funds to bring running and athletics to disadvantaged communities across Scotland.

Motherwell AC got involved by opening the doors to their club to non-members, and invited friends and family to come along for a 5k run/jog.

Friends and family, plus other local clubs turned up in support, including runners from Newton Road Runners, Jiggly Joggers Jog Scotland group, Strathaven Striders, SG Coaching, Hamilton Harriers, and Airdrie.

Club spokesperson Jac Molloy said: “It was a great night which showed the running community off in its element.

“Away from the friendly competition of events, the social run had people mixing and laughing together, whilst raising funds for a fabulous cause.

“The night was about coming together and sharing the love of their sport.”

• Meanwhile, Motherwell AC star Angus Irvine won the prestigious Atlas Running Belfast 100 mile race on Saturday.

Incorporating the Northern Ireland and Ulster championships, this race is a flat tarmac loop which has to be completed 97 times to make the 100 mile distance.

In a chip time of 15 hours, 13 minutes and 37 seconds, Angus was one of only six finishers, leading the next runner by nearly two-and-a-half hours.
