Most bizarre red card? Argentine footballer sent off for falling on opponent

Is this one of the most bizarre red cards ever given?

An Argentine footballer was sent off in a reserves match yesterday for falling on an opponent’s leg after being struck in the face with a football.

Lanus Reserves and Banfield reserves played out a 1-1 draw in the Argentina Reserve League, but the game got off to a bizarre start with Lanus going a goal up and conceding a red card inside the opening 10 minutes.

In search of a second goal, Lanus continued to attack their visitors, advancing higher up the field with their 19-year-old winger Juan Pablo Krilanovich pressing the Banfield back-line in hopes of recovering possession.

With the defence under pressure, centre-back Lautaro Cardozo tried to clear the ball upfield, but instead of clearing his lines, he pelted the ball straight into the face of Krilanovic who was arriving to steal the ball from him.

While it’s unclear if the winger fully lost consciousness, the blow to his head visibly shook Krilonvich, who lost his balance and awkwardly fell onto Cardozo’s leg.

Trapped underneath the young winger, the centre-back’s knee twisted at a discomfiting angle and looked visibly hurt as he crunched to the ground writhing in pain.

The injury did not look good on the replays with his teammates and referee surrounding the player, all looking concerned for his wellbeing after the freak accident.

But in bizarre circumstances, while Cardozo was receiving treatment, referee Martin Morenza approached the dazed Krilanovich and awarded him a red card for the non-malicious collision.
