Morgan Smithies facing four-match ban following Challenge Cup final

Wigan’s Morgan Smithies has received a four-match ban following the club’s Challenge Cup victory over Huddersfield.

Smithies, 21, has been charged for two separate incidents during the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The forward has received a Grade C High Tackle charge and a Grade B High Tackle charge. Both incidents equal two-match bans, taking his total ban to four games.

He tackled opponent Ricky Leutele high during the clash, in which many thought could have been a yellow card. However, Smithies remained on the field.

Smithies will miss games against Castleford, Salford, Toulouse and Wakefield.

The incident ruled as ‘high tackle – tried to tackle but reckless about outcome’.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield captain Luke Yates also received a Grade B High Tackle. The forward has received a two-match penalty notice.

He will miss the away trip to Catalans and the home tie against Leeds in Super League.

Matt Peet’s side went on to win the final 16-14 thanks to a 76th minute try from winger Liam Marshall. Giants had led 10-6 at half-time thanks to tries from Leutele and Chris McQueen. Harry Smith scoring Wigan’s first try of the clash.

Jai Field hit back in the second half, before one-club man Jermaine McGillvary restored his side’s lead. The Warriors snatched it in the dying minutes thanks to Marshall, scoring in front of the travelling Wigan fans.
