More new flats could be built in Ancoats

A new apartment block could be built on derelict wasteland in Ancoats. Some 40 flats could be built by Urban Splash on the Old Mill Street site, with the building being a mixture of one and two apartments.

It would sit next to the former Ancoats Hospital, currently being converted into flats, beside Stubbs Mill — now offices — and Urban Splash’s first major development in the area, The Chips building, which opened in 2009.

Plans have yet to be finalised, because the developer is seeking residents’ views on the proposals.

A spokesperson said: “Urban Splash has submitted a planning application to transform a disused site on Old Mill Street in Manchester into a new residential-led development that will complement the growing community of New Islington.

“If successful, the Howells-designed plans would allow for the creation of 40 new apartments – ranging one- and two-bedroom homes – as well as ground floor commercial uses and a communal amenity space. The proposals also prioritise green space with planned landscaping, public realm and cycle parking; there are also plans for PV panels on the roof.

“We look forward to working through the planning process and hearing an outcome in the new year.”

A letter sent to residents living nearby said that the commercial use could be ‘a shop or cafe’, with apartments getting ‘spacious private balconies and communal amenity spaces, plus five parking spaces and storage for 40 bicycles’.

The consultation event on the plans will be held at Beehive MIll on Jersey Street, M4 6JG, on November 14, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.
